Because they’re real and they mean something. For example, in 2012 I threw a party in Prague for the Pirate Party. They were making genuine progress in German politics and expanding their manifesto. There was a world wide conference in Prague and I decided I’d throw a party for them. I knew the guy that started the party, Rick Falkvinge, and over 50 people showed up at our flat, representing about a dozen countries.
The cultural dissonance was in play. The German and Dutch journalists debated freely with the Pirate members, the English came across as slightly cynical and opportunistic and when the Italian journalists arrived they asked to see the wine selection.
A little funny, perhaps a little irreverent but very evident when on display.
