Travel has meant everything and friends mean even more

4 decades ago we were ‘this close’ and it took ‘that long’ to reconnect. We laughed for 2 hours.

Once upon a time Elaine and I were best friends. We lost one another for years due to life and travel but every once in awhile I’m reminded of what I’ve lost – leaving my old home, sailing across the Atlantic and living in Europe; old, dear and precious friendships feel more necessary than ever. I can’t even find old photos of old friends. We’ve moved too many times, another casuality of a nomadic lifestyle. Nothing compares to the voice and chemisty.

I did need to laugh like that and feel that love move back and forth. Like Montaigne said, with a gender twist, “because it was she and because it was me”.

That one friend who just makes us laugh, in spite of it all. To feel so young, and old and wonderful at the same time – just meant the world. Thankfully, this feeling will linger…
