Art is the best medicine

When they asked Gustav Klimt to paint an allegory for medicine he gave us “Hygieia”

Women as caretakers, and defiant and powerful – behind her the vulnerable women, the pregnant women.

The snake and bowl remain symbols of pharmacy to this day.

Vienna is a treasure trove of Klimt and Schiele. I’ve combed the city for these two and this one is found at the Belvedere Museum. It is magnificent. I have a small version in my kitchen. It appears happy to be there and in my bedrooms small versions of The Kiss and Schiele, with his powerful ochre and compelling shades of red simply inspire me all the time. Small tho they loom large in the heart.
