I haven’t paid this much to attention since the 70’s. I thought I could not care less. Who to believe. Me or myself?
Speaking of the 70’s. When I was 13 or 14 I was a ball girl for the Virginia Slims Tennis event in Seattle. All the top tennis talent came to town. It was such a big deal, I was interviewed by some news guy, while I was hunched over, nervous, not wanting to tick off one of the divas I couldn’t wait to run around for.
I do recall Madame Epstein, my French teacher making a big deal out of it the next day. Molly, as always, was so jealous. hahaha.
But that’s not the point. If you were ranked in tennis you got to chase yellow tennis balls around the court for your idols, it was insanely exciting, especially at that age. However, we weren’t special, in fact, in between matches we had to stand in the corridor, seats at the Arena were for ticket holders only.
I can barely recall my age. Let’s say I’m 13 and a half (that’s how we used to say it, right) I was a newly young woman, literally, life was full of surprises. Like this one: I’m standing in the corridor, watching my two idols, Martina and Chris battle it out and suddenly a very deep, and dare I say odd voice from behind asks, “could you please tell me the score?”
It was the kind of moment you never forget. I turn around, look way up, and there she is, Renee Richards. Gosh, I’m transported back this minute. But hey. No judgment, we all went with the flow, it was just history happening and I was just 13 and a half years old.
And today, to be on twitter and see Martina Navratilova get so mad about this ‘guy’ beating the Italian woman. Apparently he’s been disqualified because of XY chromosome. (hope I have this right). Think Virginia Wade wanted Renee to be tested too, or not.
This is all so very confusing. Just like me, at 13 and a half, turning around, taking it all in, and telling ‘her’ the score.
We’ve come along way, baby, but I think I’m with JK Rowling in general, and Martina Navratilova, now – poor Italy. Awful Olympics. Probably learn some new Italian expletives today.
