Friedkin marked up his own copy of the hardcover. He was keen to make a straightforward story and portray it as realistically as possible. For anyone who thinks the ending is ambiguous, there are millions who agree; it’s all about faith.
Certainly, he was speaking from first hand experience. It was fate this movie was his to make. And through a series of trips to Italy, and specifically to Rome, he witnessed exorcisms long after the movie had been released; feeling more strongly about the mystery of fate and faith.
“All of the films I have made, that I have chosen to make, are all about the thin line between good and evil. And also the thin line that exists in each and every one of us. That’s what my films are about.”
William Friedkin, ‘The Exorcist’ Director, Dies at 87. Rest in peace. The movie lives on, as will the mystery of fate and faith.
Not to mention the Tubular Bells
