Marriage is not a love affair; it is an ordeal

So said Joseph Campbell, and I believe him. It’s also one of the best decisions we ever made; celebrating our 23rd today. Truly content, and quite happy I married an Italian; they’re romantic.

However, back in Seattle, when we decided to get married, my brother was quite ill with a brain tumor, and then we lost him. So, we went downtown to the court house and quietly got married by a wonderful judge named Richard Jones. Who happens to be the brother of Quincy Jones. I used to fly back and have lunch with the judge; wonderful stories and a beautiful human being. He once said, “my brother thinks the passport is the most important book…” Some of us do live to travel. Although I think I’ve had enough…

We waited until summer, until it was sunny, then threw a party at the Seattle Yacht Club. I chose to make MADI, our sailboat, the center of attention. I hired a priest to bless her, knowing we would be sailing across the Atlantic. Thought it might be the right idea.

My Bavarian and Italian relatives were quite curious about ‘Christening” the boat, offering it a blessing. But the Irish priest I found did a wonderful job. We named our sailboat MADI, after my husband’s aunt. Madi and the Irish priest had a lively discussion about the bible before we sat down to dinner – Irish and Italian catholicism aren’t necessarily compatible. And it was one beautiful day.

And, I’m still bursting with gratitude we made it across the pond. I didn’t think we’d make it – and to think we’re celebrating 23 yrs; still bursting with gratitude.
